Norwegian Air Shuttle

Hi!

I publish this article by advance because next week I will be in Oslo with some friends. I will present you briefly a big Norwegian company founded by Bjorn Kjos, an airplane pilot. Currently he is the CEO of this low-cost company. I choose to make this article because, today, one friend of mine is coming from France thank to this company. Secondly, I know well this company because at school, we made 3 group works on it.

Norwegian is the third largest low cost carrier in Europe with 28 million customers annually and around 110 aircrafts in operation with an average age of less than four years. They have the youngest fleet in the world. Norwegian is less dependent of oil price because his fleet consummation is very low and they buy oil at a good price, thanks to a good hedging strategy.

Nevertheless, like a low-cost company, they make you pay if you want earphones or a blanket during long haul for example. It is the price to pay for a cheap ticket if you don’t take any options.

The route portfolio stretches across Europe into North Africa and the Middle East, as well as long-haul routes to the US and Southeast Asia. The company has around 450 routes to more than 140 destinations on sale and employs approximately 5.500 people. Norwegian is very powerful and the company is still developing his fleet, nearly 300 planes are already orders to Airbus and Boeing.

Norwegian work hard to develop his long haul offer. It is a very long process. During two years Norwegian Air Shuttle, based in Norway fought against US state and some unions to have the right to fly to and from the US. After many twists, the company obtains the Air Operator’s certificate, AOC, from the national aviation authority of the USA. To develop his offer, Norwegian need to deal with unions and governments but those negotiations take time.

Have a nice week-end!

I have personally tried Kangoo Jump, Step Aerobics and Tae-Bo. I love this three fitness classes but if you have to choose just one, I advise you to try Kangoo Jump that is really fun and enable you to work the whole body.

National Day and Fiesta del Pilar

In this post I will talk about one of the numerous cultural events that take place in Spain every year.

On 12 October is the National Day or Fiesta Nacional de España. It is also called the Hispanic Day or the Día de la Hispanidad. This day is celebrated to commemorate the arrival of Columbus in Americas in 1492. It is also celebrated as the day of the Armed Forces. It is a public holiday. Therefore, most of the shops and all the offices are closed. Usually, Spaniards enjoy this day by watching the live broadcast of the show with family.

Civil Guard parade (photo taken by my flatmate)

It is marked with the raising of Spain’s National Flag in Madrid by the king of Spain. The flag raising ceremony is followed by a military parade which showcases the country’s weapons and artillery. An air show also takes place with the armed forces performing acrobatic maneuvers in the air.

During National day I was in Zaragoza, the regional capital of Aragon. Here, takes place the festival of the Fiestas del Pilar which lasts 9 days. Streets of Zaragoza are full of music, fireworks, flower trails, parades and of course many bullfights. But National Day is celebrated in a special way in the city. In fact, on 12 October, 100 000 people in traditional costumes make a pilgrimage. They walk trough the city streets to the Basilica for “The Offering of Flowers” to the blessed Virgin del Pilar from 6 am to the end of the day. There are also many concerts everywhere in the city.

Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar

I suggest you to go to Zaragoza during this festival. It’s really funny to see people’s disguises and the Basilica del Pilar is very impressive. I travel by bus with Erasmus Student Network. It takes 4 hours to go to the festival from Madrid but it’s worth it!

See you next week! 🙂

Scottish traditions

In Scotland, the traditions are still very strong in the society. The Scottish identity is very important here to everyone, even young people feel very proud of their customs. Today I am going to talk about few of the most iconic habits in Scotland.

  • The kilt :

I was very surprised when I first arrived in Dundee to see men actually wear a kilt. I have asked my Scottish friends who told me that wearing a kilt is very normal in Scotland for special occasions such as weddings for example. However you can see boys wearing a kilt in a club or at Uni for example. The kilt tradition comes from the Highlands, the tartan of the kilt was at first a way to know from which family each person was from.

  • The music :

The traditional Scottish music is still very present in Scotland and not only in touristy shops ! It is very common to hear some traditional music in the street. The instruments used to play this music are : the fiddle, the accordion, pipes and chanter, guitar and clarsac.

    Capture d’écran 2016-10-18 à 21.02.26

  • The highlands games :

Their are a lot of events during the summer, nearly each city has her own Highland Game. The Highland Games are composed by few heavy contests the most well known is the trunk throw.

  • The Scotch Whisky :

The Scotch is a whisky which is made in Scotland. To be consider as a Scotch Whisky, the whisky produced in Scotland as to follow some laws like being aged in oak barrels for at least three years.

  • The haggis :

The haggis is the most emblematic food of Scotland, it is a pudding which contains : sheep’s pluck, onion, oatmeal, suet, spiced and salt mixed with stock encased traditionally in the sheep stomach. However today if you buy haggis there is great chances that an artificial casing will be used rather than the traditional animal’s stomach.
The haggis is actually very well loved in Scotland, you can find it in cans or you can choose to taste it in a burger for example.
The haggis as a major importance in the traditional Scottish breakfast but it is mostly eaten as a starter.

Scottish people have as well their own language, their own banks and government.

See you next week !

Personally I live in Tirolintie with 6 others peoples. I pay only 240€ for 17 square meters and I share living room, kitchen, two toilets and two bathrooms. That is a good plan ! It’s really interesting and important to share flat with others students because it allows to meet new people, improve his English, to have a cross-cultural exchange, and share moments together. With flatsharing, I met 6 peoples who are Alexandra, Moritz, Michael, Sebastian, Josef and Carina.

Local culture: Take a bus in Norway – Funny facts.

Bench grande

A well-known stereotype about Norwegians is that they are cold and reserved. When I need to go to NHH, my school, I have to take 2 buses. The path is approximately 30 minutes. First point in public transportation: it’s very impolite to talk to an unknown guy in a bus, as reported by a Norwegian friend. But don’t worry if you need to ask for information in the street or if you are searching for a shop people will help you. Furthermore, according to my personal experience, most of citizens speak a good English.

Bus stop

Above you can see typical example of a Norwegian bus stop! Each morning when I take my first bus there are maximum 2 persons in the bus stop and others people waiting outside even when it’s raining. It’s quite funny!

There is another different between Norway and France. When the bus is nearly full, Norwegians going beside of you instead of going in front of you. It’s to avoid eye contact like Dan, a Norwegian explain me. Erasmus experience allowed you to discover this kind of cultural differences. Several masters in international business have courses about managing international diversity and difference. It’s important to respect and understand the culture of your partner. For example, something I learn here is Asian people are not use to say no when you ask something. It’s can be necessary to know it before a group work for instance. I find really interesting to meet people who have another way of thinking and other cultural habits. That’s why, I really want to travel to Asia soon in order to discover new countries and cultures.

Have a nice week 🙂
