Today, I would like to be romantic. That’s why I’m taking you to the port of Southampton to enjoy the sunset. So please take a sit and let me tell you its story.

Southampton will forever be linked with the most infamous of liners, the RSM Titanic, which sank to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean in April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City.

Of the 2,224 passengers and crew aboard, more than 1,500 died including 500 Southampton’s natives, making it one of the deadliest commercial maritime disasters in modern history.

I’m afraid you won’t see many images that I’ve actually shot in the port. I have tried to, but the port is surrounded by fences and I have received lectures by security guards on my field search, so I had to give up the fight.

The Port of Southampton, owned and operated by the Associated British Ports, or ABP, is basically divided regarding four main activities :

  • Small ships sailing and Pleasure cruising in the Ocean Village’s Marina: where take place every year an important boat show.

– Local Ferries services provided by Red Funnel to reach for example Isle of Wight.

– Southampton’s Port is also Europe’s leading turnaround cruise port. It welcomes 1,7 million passengers annually on its 4 active cruise terminals. It is for instance the base of liners such as the Queen Mary 2.

But the main activity of the port is undoubtedly its Freight and Cargo activity.

Over 90 per cent of the world’s goods are transported by sea, making maritime shipping business a vital part of world trade. The UK is recognised around the globe as a center of word class maritime business services.

The ABP Port in Southampton is the UK’s second largest container port, supporting 15 000 jobs nationally, handling 14 000 tonnes of commodities, and contributing to £1billion to the UK economy every year.

It is the UK’s number one vehicle handling port, with around 820 000 vehicles handled every year, and it is recognised by the great and the good of the maritime industry as the UK’s most efficient container port for ship side and lanside operations.

Operated by DP World Southampton, the terminal is home to the new 500m deepwater quay SCT5, which was purpose built to handle the biggest ships in the world.

(BONUS) ABP is planning to invest £150M over the next five years which will increase the port’s contribution to the economy by an estimated £437M every year.

(BONUS) Southampton offers multiple services every day to the key locations within the UK. The port is less than two miles from the M27 and has direct rail links to the main railway network for both freight and passenger trains. The Port of Southampton is served by Southampton International Airport, while Gatwick and Heathrow airports are within easy reach.

That’s why for all these reasons Southampton’s Port is proud to have the fastest productivity rate within the UK.

As the IUP Shipping Trading in Nantes, Southampton Solent University offers a specific path for students aiming to work within the maritime industry business. The international shipping and logistics master’s degree is one of the very few degrees in UK designed to equip students with the skills, knowledge and professional attitude sought after by employers within the shipping and Maritime Business industry.
