Episode’s script:

Last Sunday took place the Hindu festival of light – Diwali. An important celebration in the Hindu calendar, Diwali symbolises the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair.

Taking place over a period of five days, Diwali is a time for decorating buildings with lights, firework displays, wearing new clothes and exchanging gifts – often sweets and dried fruits.

In London the mayor, Sadiq Khan hosted a massive celebration in Trafalgar square while the prime minister Theresa May held a reception at 10 Downing Street to mark the event.

As we wanted to see how the well-established Hindu community celebrates Diwali in Southampton, we came along to the Vedic Temple on Sunday evening, where fireworks were set off.

As you can notice, the celebration was many times more modest than in London – and actually pretty dangerous as fireworks were set off very close to the crowd.

After long minutes of intense smoky fireworks shooting, the faithful headed toward the temple.

Entering this sacred place was a great opportunity to get to know a little bit more about Hinduism culture and highlighted the strong diversity of our host city – Southampton.
