This week I will speak to you about « Sports at Keele University ». During the fresher week, there was sport fair with approximately 50 different sports. This was a really important event for students looking to join a sports club. Here, students got to meet members of the team and register. Each sport offered two or three free practices for all students. This gave students the opportunity to see if they liked the sport or not. To enroll for the sport teams, students have to pay around 50£ depending on the sport. You can find all kinds of sports here. It’s a good opportunity to discover and play new sports which are not common in France. These sports include lacrosse, snorkeling, hockey, climbing, and beach-volley. There of course, are the classics sports as well, like football, basketball, rugby, gym, and tennis. There’s a lot of space given for sport teams at Keele. Also, if you aren’t competitive, you can play only for pleasure. There is beautiful gym on campus also if you just want to work out with a trainer. Keele offers a lot of activities like running in group and Friday football, etc. I tried out for tennis, football and rugby.
Finally I chose to play rugby. There are 2 squads who play for the BUCS (the university championship). Here, the rugbymens are very proud to play for Keele University and it is really competitive to be selected for the first team. I have training two times per week and one game on Wednesday. There’s also a social after the match on Wednesday night. The atmosphere with my teammates is really fun, it’s the best way to make friends and share a good time! Sports is really important aspect here on campus. The students are all proud of our teams. Some people come to support around the field and cheer us on.

See you next week and enjoy your life !

Sitsit party
A Sitsit is a traditional student party in Finland and Sweden, but what kind of party is a sitsit? It is a very special dinner party with its own particular conventions, including drinking, singing and cheering. During this party every students have to respect the dress code: Gold diggers & sugar daddies. At the beginning, the “director” of the sitsit gives a little speech and announces the following song. After each melody, you have to chink glasses with your neighbors. People begin to eat in a warm and funny atmosphere. Some students played some sketch, it was very funny, but difficult to understand because it was in Finnish but I improved my skills in this language ! As the party went on, more and more songs were sang.
If you have the chance to visit Finland, you should participate in a sitsit.

Good opportunities for Students
Dundee is a city where there are many students. That’s why, it has to be attractive for them.
To be appealing, all shops in the city propose good opportunities for students.
-The first is “Pancake place” : All Monday’s afternoon students can have a reduction of 25%.
-The bar “Counting house” : they propose some reductions in a booklet. You can have a reduction on beer, British breakfast, nachos… You just have to cut out the page and give it to the barman. This bar is really good for students because it is cheap.

Booklet with reductions
-The “Bar One” : It is in the student centre. We can have cocktails for just £3. I think it’s a very good opportunity for students.
-The restaurant “Project pie” : Pizzas are very good and traditional (They are better than Domino’s pizzas). With our student card we have 15% off.
-“The Union nightclub” : On Tuesday night the entrance is only £2 and all drinks cost £1 whereas the other nights the entrance is £5
-“The liquid nightclub” : On Wednesday the entrance cost £3.5 if you have the flyer. The flyer is available in the library in the welcome lounge.

Overgate Student Night Flyer
We participated at the “Overgate student night” in the commercial centre “Overgate”. It begin at 6pm to 9pm. We have reduction in almost of the shops inside (such as H&M, TOPSHOP..). Moreover inside we have free foods and free drinks.
The entrance is free but we have had to book by filling out a form and take a bracelet.
Be careful. We have had to be there thirty minutes before because there are a lot of people.
Finally, to do sport, we go to the gym with Abertay Sport (£30 per semester) because it is cheaper than the gym in the centre (£20 per months)
Arrival Guide
You are just arrived to Dundee and you are completely lost? You need a duvet, a pillow, some plates, some cutleries, some food… and you don’t know where buy all of that? Then, this guide is for you! In this guide I’m going to give you some advices to help you to make your installation as smooth as possible.
First of all, I’m going to present you the functioning of the student accommodation.
There are 4 accommodations: Meadowside, Victoria Chambers, Parker House and Lyon’s Street. In each accommodation you have several flats with several bedrooms in each flat. Each flat have 1 or 2 kitchens for all the students of the flat with table, chairs, fridges, freezers, sink, hotplate, oven, microwave, cupboards, dishwasher… You have to buy your own plates, cutleries and kitchen utensils. Kitchens are cleaned once a week by cleaners. Bedrooms are composed of one little bed, one desk, one chair, one cupboard, and one chest of drawers. You need to buy sheets, duvet and pillow for your bed. You can choose a bedroom with your own shower room, or the shower room can as well be in common. Your shower room is also cleaned but not every week it depends of the accommodation, so you must buy some household products too.
So, as you can see you have to buy lots of things when you arrive in the accommodation. And I know it’s difficult because you don’t know the city so you don’t know where you can buy all of that. That’s why I’m going to give you some advices.
First, for kitchen utensils and household products you can go in the mall Wellgate where there are lots of shop where everything cost £1 so it’s really interesting. There is also this kind of shop in the city centre.
Then, to buy food you can go to Tesco which is a supermarket like in France and it’s not very expensive. There is also M&S which is bigger so you have more choice but it’s a little bit more expensive. The Iceland shop in the Wellgate is well to buy frozen foods because you have lots of choice.
To finish, you can go to the Primark to buy your sheets, duvet, pillow and other household linens. Primark is a big shop situated in the shopping centre Overgate which sell also clothes and which is really cheap! In the Overgate there are many other clothes shops as H&M, New Look and Topshop, so it’s a good place to shop!
I’ve tried to give you the best advices for your move. But if you have any other questions, feel free to post a comment and I will try to answer at best!
Travel within Norway
As promised in my last article, today I’m going to present you the «Oslo-Bergen train” but also some other alternatives.
If you decide to cross from West to East of the country, the essential question is « By train or by plane?”. Crossing the country at least once by this railway line is the custom in Norway. Yes…Norwegians are proud of this line, considered it is one of the most beautiful in Europe. And it’s not very surprising! You can admire a variety of landscapes which are spectacular.
However, you would have to be willing to stay 7 hours in a train… (Between exhausted and exhausting children!)
For the risk-takers, of course, the car is also a possibility. But don’t be rushed… It’s difficult to go for a drive in a country like this one, between winding roads and fjords (not to mention the changeable weather which necessitates to reduce speed…). By the bye, the road authorities have selected some recommended national tourist roads for their landscape and their accessibilities. Tunnels and car ferries are also an integral part of the road system. Indeed, there are now around 100 ferries crossings connecting public roads in Norway.
Still, you are assured to share the road with drivers pretty quiet and disciplined.
Despite being wonderful, some small villages in Norway don’t have any gas station and the next gas station might be more than 100 km away. So don’t forget your full jerry can…
I will finish by a very short story to illustrate the difficulties to get around in Norway:
At the beginning of the September, we went hiking three hours away. At the time to return (No time to lose, as we had to return the rented car!), a man explained us that the road was blocked for the next two hours. He specified that there was no other alternative and asked us to park the car. Oh yes, it was probably indicated…in Norwegian! Trying to understand how it was possible to close a road without making a diversion, the guy answered us in cracking a smile: “Welcome in Norway!”.
Finally, after having an argument with the rental cars company managers, they did not take into account our delay and understood that we weren’t used to have this kind of surprise…
Trip to Kuusamo (Finland)
The previous week-end, I went to Kuusamo, a city in the northeast of Finland known for its natural park.
The program: hiking in the great park of 270 km and a weekend in a big cozy cottage: Chill and Sauna !

The team in Oulanka
Above, you can see our house, surrounded by one of the thousand lakes in Finland. In Finland, it’s common to rent a house with some friends for a week-end, it’s called “Mökki Week End”. During this week end, we enjoyed a hikking trip in the natural park of Oulanka and we had greats moments in our house doing BBQ parties and explore the lake with the little boat we had at our disposal. Note: Next time, take fishing rods.
… And YES, SAUNAS ! Not one but two saunas in our house ! Finnish people are in love with them.
So after an exhausting 12 kilometers hiking, we experienced several times Sauna and jump into the, pretty cold, lake ! We went from 80 degrees to 3 degrees in less than 10 seconds. Good for cardiovascular system they said, hum hum… despite the fact that we could not feel our feet, what an amazing experience !
This photo was taken after a little nap on the dock of the propriety, the nap was definitively advisable after this wonderful week end !
Below, you can have a panoramic view of our house, in the middle of nowwhere in the Northeast of Finland !

Hailuoto Island

Fishing village

Way to go to the beach
In september, we went for one day on a island near to Oulu. Hailuoto Island is the pearl of Bothnian Bay. Situated in the North of the Gulf of Buthnia, in the face of Oulu, the municipality is totally an island. Hailuoto lies within easy access. Various means of transport can be used : come by car, board a bus, sail a boat or fly over. Ferries ‘ Meriluoto and Merisilta’ operates regularly between Hailuoto and Oulunsalo (Oulu). In winter an official ice road connects the island to the mainland. The distance between the island and Oulu should fill (over the centuries to come), and to disappear since sea levels will rise.
Marjaniemi is the westernmost point in the island at the end of the road in Hailuoto. Marjaniemi is endless open spaces with fishing boats on the harbor, restaurant, café, artisan shop, museum and beach. The importance of fishing for the fishing village and villagers is still present today. Even today, considerable amounts of herring, whitefish and salmon are unloaded from ships in the harbor. One of the most popular attractions in Hailuoto is the Marjaniemi lighthouse, built in 1871. On the top, we have a beautiful view of the ocean.

¡Tapas!
Hi everyone! Today I want to dedicate my post on one of the major food tradition in Spain: TAPAS!
In fact, tapas originated in Spain, where according to legend (there are many), King Alfonso 10th, The Wise King of Spain, had once been stricken with a serious illness which only allowed him to take in small portions of food with small amounts of wine. After recovering from his illness, the king issued a decree that no wine should be served in bars unless it was served with food.
Tapas are small plates of food to be consumed with wine or other alcohol at a drinking establishment. There are no tapas restaurants, only tapas bars! Tapas can be any type of food, from nuts, olives, and assorted cheeses to roasted meats and stews. The most important thing about “tapeo” (the art of eating tapas) is the gathering of people to socialize as they drink and eat.
You will also find that tapas follow the gastronomic tastes and traditions of each region in Spain, but that types of olives, nuts, meats and cheeses are universal to all areas.
- Here it’s the top 5 traditional Spanish tapas:

Tortilla de patatas. Omelette with fried chunks of potatoes.

Gambas al ajillo. Sauteed prawns with garlic.

Pulpo a la gallega. Galician-style octopus served in olive oil, lots of paprika, and sea salt.

Croquetas. One of the most common tapas, you can try the croquetas de espinacas y queso made with spinach and cheese

Aceitunas. Campo Real olives (name of the olive of Madrid) or the big ones filled with anchovies.
In Madrid and some others places in Andalousia, when you order a drink, often a tapa will be served with it for free. In several cities, entire zones are dedicated to tapas bars, each one serving its own unique dish.

Cerveceria 100 montaditos bar
I have already test a lot of different tapas bars. It’s a good way to meet and speak with your friends at the end of the day and most of them are really cheap!
I can recommend you one very popular: Cervecería 100 Montaditos. It’s a bar chain which counts 350 restaurants in Spain. Its success it’s based on the friendly atmosphere and the menu. In fact, each tapas never costs more than 5 euros and every Wednesday and Sunday all the menu it’s at only 1 euro!
I hope that I did not give you too much hunger! 😉 Have a good week!
Modules Presentation
If you are thinking about studying at Abertay University next year you might have already looked at the modules catalogue. It is kind of hard to figure out what your courses will be like only with a small description, that’s why I decided to present you the modules that I am studying. In France I am in L3, in Abertay I have a module from the second year and two from third year because here students start since the first year to really study accounting. In Abertay you only need to take three modules to validate your semester.
- Financial Accounting :
This module is from the second year programme, I am very happy that I took it because otherwise I would have had a hard time to manage my second accounting module. For this module I have one hour of lecture and two hours tutorial, however we are only 10 students in this module so the lecture and the tutorial look the same.
For this course as for every other one I am studying here the lecturers are really organized and they show you the module schedule on the first class so you are fully aware of what you are going to study.

As you can see we studied consolidation during the first half of the semester and now we are going to start to look at smaller subjects.
In this modules you have to give back an essay which counts for 30% of your grade for the semester, this year the topic is ” Integrated Reporting “.
Next week ( week 7 ) is feedback week so you can go to the class and ask your questions which is great because we had our first mock exam this week.
- International Financial Accounting :
For this module the lecturer is the same that for Financial accounting, it is the rest of the first module. I am not sure I would have understood this module without the first one.

We change topic every two weeks which makes this module very interesting. The final exam counts for 100% of your grade.
For those two modules the textbook is the same, I would recommend buying it if you want to work at home because you may have some lacks of knowledge on some of those topics.
Even if you will find a lot of informations and exercises on your intranet.
- Corporate Finance :
This module is the best of those three in my opinion. The lecturer is really good, he explains every concept very clearly so it makes it very easy to understand.
In this module like in every modules you feel like the lecturer really wants you to succeed. At the end of the lectures as on the end of the tutorials you have to take a ” clicker ” and press a number between 1 and 4, 1 means you perfectly understood everything and 4 means you didn’t understand anything.

This module is very interesting and because the lecturer used to work in banks he gives you real life situation to illustrate a concept, it makes the module less theoretical and way more captivating.
I hope you will find this post helpful.
See you next week
A Bachelor’s schedule at NHH, Norway.
This week I describe my courses at NHH. I have 4 courses this semester: Economic crime, Purchasing strategy and supply chain management, Organizational theory and Frontiers of business ethics.

In economic crime: prevention and detection, we study white collar crime, mafias and gang’s economy. For example, my first and second assignment was on HSBC and money laundering system. This course is interesting, the teacher use a lot of relevant data concerning mafia, drug and crime. Here, the grade scale is from A to F for evaluations.
Secondly, purchasing strategy and supply chain management is based on theory. We talk about outsourcing, transaction cost or relation between business to business. I already made two group work with a French girl and three friendly girls from Japan. The big one was about BOSE, the American Hi-Fi company.
Now the course which is occurred in AUD MAX (cf picture in previous article): Organizational theory. This course is quiet interesting; we had guest lecture with important managers like chief manager of Oracle, Norway. In this course we have 3 assignments and 3 oral presentations per group plus a final exman. We already made two. Organizational theory is the most demanding course. For each assignment, we need to analyze a firm and make 8 pages. We choose Norwegian Air Shuttle with my group (2 guys from Norway and me). We have one week to make a draft version and send to the teacher assistant. After a couple of day, we receive a feedback and have a few days left to send the final version. I like the principal of draft. Thanks to feedback you can exchange with teacher and understand your faults before the final submission. Second point, for each homework, a presentation of 10 minutes is required, they called this session “seminar”. Just one person of the team presents the work during an oral presentation. I did it last week. My subject was: external environment of Norwegian. For this, there is no precise grade, it’s pass or no pass. If your work is not acceptable, you have a second chance to resubmit and remake an oral presentation. Hopefully, it wasn’t my case!

I conclude this article by my favorite: Frontiers of business Ethics. Our teacher, Knut J. Ims, is an old and very peaceful person. After a lecture of 3hours, you have the same feeling than after a yoga session. We are talking about moral choices, philosophy or environment. Each lecture begins by a song, such as Beethoven or Pharrell Williams with happy, and ended by clapping from the teacher and from the students.
This paragraph concludes my weekly article.
Have a good week 🙂
