“Hi ! My name is Félix Goizet and I am a second year Master student. I am twenty-three years old. I am going to present you the exchange I had with Justine Torquéau. The questions she may have asked me and the answers I gave her.
First of all, Justine asked me why I started studying psychology, and why I was specializing in clinical psychology.
So, I started with a first year of medical school after high school, only I was not sure what I wanted to do. During that first year I had some Psychology and Psychiatry classes that I found interesting. When I stopped medical school, I told myself that I had to study what I was most interested in, or at least what I thought would be the most fun to learn. I think that’s why I chose psychology. It’s also related to the fact that I worked a lot as a youth leader in social centers, in contact with children and adolescents. And I think that these experiences helped to enrich my personal path, but they were also decisive in the development of my professional project and in the idea of orienting myself towards psychology studies. Afterwards, I think that my specialization in Clinical Psychology is related to my internship experiences with a Clinical Psychologist, the first one was carried out during my second year of Bachelor’s Degree, in Child Protection in Laon, within the “Judicial Educational Assistance” service. The second internship was carried out in the “Maison des Adolescents” in Brest. Discovering the practice of clinical psychologist reinforced the idea of orienting myself more specifically in this direction. I have a marked attraction for the relational dimension of this profession. Also, the analytical and systemic approaches and the fact of taking into account the psyche of the subject in its entirety are aspects to which I am very interested.
Then I was asked to elaborate on my research paper. I will also explain why I chose this topic.
The subject chosen for my study and research work is about the management of violence in placement institutions of the Youth Judicial Protection. This study was constructed during my First year of Master’s Degree internship in an educational placement institution called “Unité éducative d’hébergement collectif”, service of the Y.J.P. The subject of my thesis follows my numerous observations and reflections during my internship. I chose this subject in connection with the fact that today, many institutions of placement in the Y.J.P. are in difficulty to welcome these suffering adolescents and to ensure them a structuring space of protection, and security. The various speakers noted a major “crisis” within the judicial placement system. Acts of violence are an integral part of the life of the. Y.J.P. institutions that receive these adolescents. I have observed many situations of violence between young people but also violence towards the educators. Because of their impact on the professionals and on the adolescents, the issue of violence management within the placement institutions seems to be a major subject to conceptualize and to think about. I was able to observe that most of the actions taken in the institution were sometimes denied, not recognized, and did not bring any clear answer. Regarding the adolescents’ difficulties in the institution, it seems necessary that the various actions taken by young people be anticipated, integrated and analyzed by professionals of the institution. Preventing the occurrence of such events, rethinking the necessary skills, positions, attitudes and institutional tools would contribute to the implementation of an operating framework that would provide both young people and professionals with basic security and capacity.
Afterwards, I was asked to list my various internship experiences and to express what it had brought me professionally.
As I mentioned, I was able to do 3 internships during my studies. The first one lasted 1 month, during which I was with a child protection psychologist. I was able to attend all the institutional meetings and interviews with children and adolescents.
Then I did an internship at the Maison des Adolescents in Brest, where I was able to follow the psychologist during interviews with parents and also when he was welcoming adolescents.
Finally, my Master 2 internship is in continuity with that of Master 1, at the Y.P.J I finish this internship in December, after which I will go to another structure. This last internship at the Y.P.J was the opportunity for me to highlight my relational skills with adolescents in difficulty and psychological suffering.
These experiences allowed me to develop a capacity of listening, observation, analysis of different situations, skills that are essential to the practice of this profession. This finally gave me a vision and a broader reflection in the apprehension of children, teenagers and parents’ difficulties.
Finally, Justine asked me about the field I would like to work in, in the future.
I wish to work in social or judicial action. In particular, I am thinking about taking the exam for the Judicial Youth Protection.
So, that was my short presentation. Good bye !”
Félix Goizet, Master 2.
