Limits

A limit that we can bring is the confusion between actual hypnosis and psychological treatments using hypnotic suggestions (relaxation, guided imagery and action on well-being in general, for instance). That is why it would be necessary to have a standardization of the hypnotic technique used in the research, in order to compare the effectiveness of hypnosis in relieving chronic pain. This progress could provide a better identification of hypnotic treatment innovations in chronic pain and could also lead to a specification of treatments. Moreover, many researchers point out that studies focus on hypnosis in pain relief, while it may have beneficial effects on other aspects of this “pathology” such as anxiety, sleep, or quality of life.

Finally, researchers highlight that the effectiveness of hypnotic techniques in the treatment of mixed pain also depends on hypnotic responsiveness of the patient. Each person does not respond to hypnosis the same way, it is a singular and subjective treatment, which leads to different results from one individual to another and according to the induction’s context (Jensen, McArthur, et al., 2006 cited by  Elkins, P.Jensen et Patterson, 2007).

Conclusions

To conclude, it would be relevant to develop a research focused on the benefits of self-hypnosis. Indeed, in addition to hypnosis performed in a coaching session with a therapist, it seems that self-hypnosis is a good way of relieving pain when it occurs. In this way the subject can himself control his pain whenever it arises. It is then no longer the pain which controls the subject’s life but the patient who regains control over it. At this time patient recovers an active part in the relief of his pains. Otherwise, consideration about this type of practice could allow to get some distance between patient and the medical world, something that has been requested on the past and is currently asked by patients. Studies on this topic could lead to specifications, recommendations and advice on the ideal number of self-hypnosis sessions required for the reduction of chronic pain. Research is still to be constructed.
