English podcast retranscription

  • Both : Hello !

  • Margot : We are here to record the English podcast, and my name is Margot

  • Carolin : My name is Carolin

  • Margot : And, we’re gonna ask some questions to each other and Carolin is gonna begin

  • Carolin : Yes, I’m going to ask you several questions now and then, later, you’ll ask me yours.

  • Margot : Perfect, okay.

  • Carolin : So, my first question would be: did you always wanted to become an I/O Psychologist when you were growing up ?

  • Margot : Mmh no, not really, when I was a child I committed myself to a career in veterinary sciences. And during highschool I realized that I didn’t want to see the pain among pets and their owners. So, as I was a swimmer I decided to engage in a sport university. But, unfortunately, the selection was based on a random draw, and I haven’t been chosen.

  • Carolin : I’m sorry for that. But then when why did you finally choose to apply for psychology studies at the University ?

  • Margot : After the random draw to join the sport University, I went to the medicine University because it was on my hightschool wish list. And, this list is an obligation in the educational system in France and students must follow their primary choices. However, medical studies were not a part of my career plan so that is why I decided to register at the psychology university.

  • Carolin : Okay, and what have you been expecting about the subject before you enrolled for it?

  • Margot : I expected to learn more about human behavior and the brain functioning. This question is quite difficult and I can’t really be objective because nowadays I already learn a lot about psychology.

  • Carolin : So, did the research and teaching met the expectations you had before ?

  • Margot : The research and teaching were as I expected it. Furthermore I was surprised by the multitude of subjects like the… for instance neuropsychology. Moreover, I didn’t know anything about I/O Psychology before the beginning of my studies. And my choice for this speciality was built thanks to some university lecturer and researcher in the social psychology and ergonomics fields.

  • Carolin : So, it sounds like you’ve never regret your choice ?

  • Margot : No, and despite the fact that I have some concerns, especially about the internship and the occupational integration, I really like the most part of what I have learned since I started studying psychology. Added to that, my last internship strengthened my appetence for the I/O Psychologist occupations in the field of prevention.

  • Carolin : So is that something you’re planning to do after your graduation ?

  • Margot : Yes, when I will be graduated, I would like to work as an organizational consultant. Namely, I want to improve quality of life in the workplace and to prevent psycho-social risks.

  • Carolin : That’s interesting, thank you for answering my questions!

  • Margot : You’re welcome !

  • Carolin : You also prepared some questions for me

  • Margot : Yes, so I heard that you are an Erasmus student from Germany, are there some differences between I/O psychology classes in France and in Germany?

  • Carolin : I think yes, in general there are a lot of differences because I think we have another type of teaching, so I think we…, the lecturers are more free and so- frankly nobody is typing while being in a lecture and there is no obligation to be there so everybody is there for their free will *laughs*.  And one can really feel a difference because a lot of people are enrolling in discussions during the lecturer with the professor and it’s like very… It’s very…*laughs*

  • Margot : interactive ?

  • Carolin : Yes it’s very interactive – thank you ! It’s very interactive and mhm , here it’s different, I think a lot of people are typing a lot during class and I think, this is a bit confusing for me I think, because I’m not good at typing quick.

  • Margot : Okay !

  • Carolin : Yes, there is a big difference !

  • Margot : And, Have you ever made an internship ?

  • Carolin : Yes, I did two, I did one in the area of research for a conflict studies because I was interested in the field between psychology and other social sciences and I wanted to become like a researcher for « peace » *Laughing* when I was younger, that was interesting but in the end I mostly wrote the presentations for my executive, which was a bit boring. So, I wanted to do a second internship and I went to a hospital to do an intern as a psychotherapist which I liked a lot, yeah so…

  • Margot : And which tasks were given to you as a psychotherapist ?

  • Carolin : It was a very psychodynamic hospital so there were a lot of group sessions, therapeutic group sessions, and I was allowed to join these sessions and also to be a co-therapist. So, I was allowed to ask questions, to give advice, and they were a lot of different kinds- a lot of different forms of therapy in this hospital so not just talking, but also like drawing, doing a lot of art, a lot of movement and sports and I was allowed to join all those different activities and sometimes I was also allowed to join the therapy just with the patient and the therapist. And I really loved that so, there were very friendly to me about that, that was nice. I got a lot of insight.

  • Margot : Okay, and, when you graduate, you would like to work as a psychotherapist ?

  • Carolin : I think, not directly after my graduation because in Germany it’s really costly to do that, to do a training to become a psychotherapist and it needs three years to become a psychotherapist at least ! But there also training which have a duration of five years so it’s crazy but I think I would like to start working and gathering some money to change my student lifestyle *laughing*. That’s a bit of the reason I started to or I choose the I/O courses here in Nantes to be able to find work at an organisation or an enterprise as an I/O psychologist.

  • Margot : Okay, and, did you choose to study I/O Psychology because of a specific reason ? Like a job for example ?

  • Carolin : I don’t think so. Like when I was younger I had a lot on mind but I was not really, I was just not really focused on my later career. I think, at the beginning I wanted to do something which was related to theatre. But I did an intern in theatre, I didn’t like it so I changed my mind. I wanted to do some social sciences and I think I choose psychology because… like firstly there were people who adviced me to do it. They said something like « Carolin, it will please you I think » and as well, on the other side there were … I think when you study psychology afterwards you have a lot of opportunities for work because you can find work in a lot of different fields. So it’s like I postponed my decision about what I really want to become later… And I still have a lot of options so this is very nice for me, and that’s why I’m pleased with my studies as well.

  • Margot : In your opinion, are there some mistakes a psychologist should avoid ?

  • Carolin : That’s a tough question but I think for example, as an I/O psychologist one works right in the middle between the organization and the employees and it’s very important to safeguard the balance about how much attention one gives to the employees or the organization so, I think this is really not easy, one has to be concentrated, be conscient about one  is doing. Yes, in general there is a lot of mistakes one can do a psychologist but I think, I‘ll worked that out when I’ll really start my working. It comes with the practice I think.

  • Margot : Yes I think too

  • Carolin : Yes, you think so too ?

  • Margot : Yes, and do you plan to open your own Psychologism office ?

  • Carolin : This would be a dream of me actually when I, when I’m older this would be very nice. When I’ll have found my place I want to stay for the rest of my life I’d like to open up a little clinic to be self-employed as a psychotherapist. That would be very nice yes… But after my graduation… There is plenty of time to do that!

  • Margot : Ok, thank you, thank you for your answers,

  • Carolin : Thank you for your questions !

  • Margot : Goodbye !

  • Carolin : Goodbye !
