Interview of Marie

Chloe : Ok, hello Marie I am Chloe

Marie : Hello Chloe

Chloe : And I have some question for you,

Marie : Ok

Chloe : First, What is your background marie ?

Marie : Ok, Since the beginning of my studies in 2015, I have been working as a massage therapistfor a luxury hotel in different countries in Europe and in Pacific, like in Australia,New Zealand, Brussels and I did that for 7 years. I also worked as a make-upartist for different scary movies in Brussels with the make-up brand M.A.C., it was unbelievable. Since I didn’t have a scholarship, I worked as a life guardduring summer, in Burgundy because it is where my family lives. And after that I did 3 clinical interships in neurology in the C.H.U of Dijon, its essential purpose being the acquisition of knowledge in neuro-psychology and management. I learned a lot. It convinced me that it was precisely what I wanted to do and that what I do isn’t “ivorytower” work. That being said, I am not convinced that we have yet found the right balance between flexibility and protection for patients and caregivers.

Chloe : Ok, thank you, in your cursus of psychology have you hesitated between several framework of psychology ?

Marie : Yes. In my first and second year at the university of Nimes, I met Miss Compan, she is a famous neurobiologist at the United States, she was my neuroscience teacher, she is amazing, she is such a passionate teacher. And, at this moment, I aspired to become a neuroscientist, who studies corrections between fasting and mental disorders. I wanted to focus on an experiment that exhibits a link between fasting and mental disorders. I believed, and I still think this research was important because psychologists should study neurobiology and the science behind current theories. My goal was to explain how brains work without food, I wanted to show that this approach would provide more effective, practical help to people living with mental disorder likes chizophrenia/depression. But, after two years in Nimes, it was time for me to leave. I think it’s important to learn different opinions in various universities, and I decided to go to the university of Caen. I was very disappointed when I got there, because the reality of the situation became established.  With reference to teaching, many interventions were solely made for the teaching curricula of social science and humanities group. You coudn’t choose between options, nothing. I further discovered that the teaching of neuroscience in Caen had only one interest: to promote professors in recognition research. I however consider teaching as more than a set of techniques to be transmitted and mastered. I decided to go to the university of Nantes to learn more about psychology. I then chose to specialize in social psychology.

Chloe: ok, nice and why did you choose social psychology ?

Marie : Yeah… for me, suffering at work indicates the need to call upon models developed in the fields of health psychology, medical anthropology and health sociology. The technology and nanotechnologies have begun to join forces with cognitive science, social psychology and other social sciences. The existence of a new psychology method gives hope. If we can work together, sociologist, psychologist, manager… we can change things, the organization improve the well-being of employees and keep a good level of production. And a practicing psychologist is trained to assess and diagnose problems in thinking, feelings and behavior as well as to help people overcome or manage these problems. A psychologist is uniquely trained to use psychological tests to perform assessment and diagnosis. Psychologists help people to overcome or manage their problems using a variety of treatments or psychotherapie. It is for these reasons that I chose to become a social psychologist to help others.

Chloe: Ok thank you, and do you have some internship projects for your M1?

Marie : Yes I have already an internship at the CHU in Nantes. I’m working on a big project. This project aims at improving the working conditions of nursing assistants in retirement homes. And I help prostitutes at night with an association.

Chloe : ok and what about your master’s thesis ?

Marie : I’m not sure about that. Ask me the same question in one week, but probably related to what I do in my internship.

Chloe : Ok thank you marie, to conclude, i have a last question for you, if you could be a famous social psychologist, who would you be ?

Marie : Good question ! If I could be a famous social psychologist I would like to be Carine Veys she was my teacher in four years ago and she gives so many things for sustantibal developpement.

Chloe : Ok thank you !

Marie : Thank you

Interview of Chloé

Marie : Okay Chloé, now it’s my turn to ask you some question. For the first question I have for you is, how do you define social psychology and what do you think are the strengths and challenges of this specialization ?

Chloe : I would define social psychology as the overall psychology which studies man in his relations with others, his environment and society. As a triangular relationship you know. But more specifically IO psychology studies the link of man to work and conversely. The strengths of social psychology is that it enables to study human behavior which we cannot control but that we are all facing; as stereotypes, discrimination, health issues at work etc. Social psychologists or IO psychologists are poorly recognized in France even though they have a significant importance in today’s society and in the future as well if we consider for example the growth of artificial intelligence which aims at cutting a lot of jobs. I would say that challenges in social psychology are the same as those of psychology in general. When we talk about psychologist people are afraid, they think that we are going to analyze them, to decipher them and psychology is poorly known in France like I said and too much likened to psychoanalysis. And our duty, or what I consider as our duty, is to be able to show that this is not psychology, at least it is not only that, and to show that there are many fields to be explored.

Marie : Ok, could you tell us the objectives of your master’s thesis and why is it important ?`

Chloe : Yes, the objective of my master’s thesis was to find a technique of interview including detection of deception for police investigators or insurers. The aim was to find a technique of interview which would enable them to discern sincere testimony from a deceitful one. The judicial system in France is subject to a lot of judicial errors and this study was made to offer tools to these professionals to reduce these justice misjudgments. This study was very important to me because I chose the theme “detection of deception”which does not really fit within the framework of IO psychology as for example: the psychosocial risks; the discrimination in recruitment etc. And my master’s thesis is in line with social psychology more precisely with social cognition. And I am often asked why I did not choose a classic theme of IO psychology. And I always answer that my main objective is to work in the police to be a psychologist in the judiciary field. And this way my report is coherent with my professional project but also with my major of IO psychology because I have to offer tools to facilitate the activity of policemen.

Marie : Ok, and what is yourplan after your graduate ?

Chloe : My dream, the one that I always had since my first year of psychology, is to be a profiler. Unfortunately it is not a diploma recognized in France. But It begins to develop under the term of “psychologist of crime”. But that is a dream … and at first when I graduate I would like to work in human resources as a recruitment manager or career advisor. At the same time, I plan to enroll for a university degree of criminology-victimology in order to achieve my second objective to be a psychologist in the police which handles problems of recruitment; thus helps policeman suffering at work and helps the victims.

Marie : Ok , do you feelcomfortable, qualified enough to be able to work as a psychologist?

Chloe : I think that a psychologist’s job is to learn throughout his career. I am convinced that it is the people we are going to meet in our interventions or our career who will contribute to teach us our work. Of course my 5 years of studies taught me the necessary theoretical background to integrate to a professional life. And my internships reassured me as to the skills I am able to implement as psychologist but to be honest, no, I don’t feel ready and I am very afraid. But that is part of the game. And I look forward to be 8 months from now and be able to say: I am a psychologist. I will be proud to say it. At least I hope I will be able to say it!!!

Marie : Ok thank you Chloe

Chloe : Your welcome , bye
