Dorian : Hello Laura, we are here to talk about IO psychology, are you ready?
Laura : Yes
Dorian : Why did you choose IO psychology ?
Laura : I choose IO psychology because I was interested in social representation and psycho-social risks. It was the best way to deepen this topics. Indeed, with the differents jobs that I did in parallel to my studies I discovers that a big part of our identity was in reference to our job and that’s why I was interested in IO psychology.
Dorian : Okay
Laura : What makes you want to be psychologist ? What were your expectations ? Did your studies change your expectations and your representation about psychology ?
Dorian : At first, I did not want to be a psychologist, which led me here is a whole circumstance of things. I did not know anything about psychology, since it is not taught in high school. I discovered psychology little by little with all its characteristics, its complexity and its issues which seem to me more than important today in order to be able to help whoever needs help with all the knowledge that we can acquire during the cursus.
Laura : Hum, okay
Dorian : What was your representation at the beginning of your studies and now about IO psychology ?
Laura : When I started my studies, I have been confronted to social representations of psychologist like « wow you will analyse me ? » when I said I was in psychology and I realize that few people know what was exactely a psychologist. About IO psychlogy, first I think that it was only for work : in recruitment or human ressources and now I know that it’s more open, we can work in prevention for example but also not only work in a company, we can work at the hospital, in associations, etc
And you, during your studies, do you think the representation of psychology change ?
Dorian : I never really took a particular interest in psychology before I entered in, but my representation was simple: Freud and a person who listens to you while you lie on a couch. Fortunately, this representation has changed, I have been able to see all that a psychologist can contribute in all the fields combined and I was astonished precisely at the fields in which psychology is present.
Have you already completed an internship in IO psychology ?
Laura : No I have never completed any internship in IO psychology, not actually, In march it will be my first internship. We have to do an internship and it will be the first one.
What’s your personal experience in internship ? Was it difficult to find an internship ?
Dorian : I did two internships in my third and fourth year. I did them in recruitment agencies because I was very interested in this problem and all that is behind this process. It is quite complicated to find a short period of observation, but the field of recruitment is quite open with many possibilities.
And, do you think that what you are interested in now can change at the end of the master ?
Laura : Maybe, for example, when I started the master I had a precise idea of what I wanted to do after, but with the differents classes we have, I discover other area so, I’m waiting for my internships and it will depend of what professional I will meet in my cursus.
About IO psychology, did you choose this way with a specific idea of what you wanted to do after ?
Dorian : As I said, I did an internship in a recruitment agency in my third year, and that’s why I decided to enter this master’s degree. And once again, I was able to discover new fields where social psychology can operate. Especially in organizations with risk prevention, or psychosocial risks.
More precisely about IO psychology, are you interested in a particular field ?
Laura : As I said before, I’m very interested in social representation and psychosocial risks because this fields are the most visible in our society to me and because I understand that it’s possible to apply it everywhere, in every structures.
And you, what’s your prefered topic in IO psychology ? Why ?
Dorian : What I prefer in social psychology is to be able to see the human being as a whole, that is, the individual and collective side. The work aspect takes an important place in everyone’s life and I really like the fact that I can help to improve work with everything related to quality of life, risk prevention.
