In the present publication we will focus on training engineering and the place of psychologists in this process.  We are particularly interested in the population that interests us in the field of work psychology: adult workers. All this will also allow us to highlight the qualities of the psychologist.

Building and running a training course requires a lot of investment, reflection and skills. Therefore, psychologists known for their analytical skills, their empathy but also their great methodology seem to be the right ones.

Training engineering is a process that goes from the design of the training to the evaluation of the training action. It also includes the animation of the training.

In some literature, there is the term ” pedagogical engineering “, this notion examines more the contents and the methods in the learning process, within the course itself. We are not looking at this today. In short, when a course is created, delivered to a designated audience and the intention is to verify that it has been effective, this is called training engineering.

Then why ask psychologists to participate in this process?

  • Because everyone learns differently, and with an individual or a group the psychologist will be able to adapt the training programme to each individual. A psychologist is trained to interact with a group and is trained to interview individuals; he or she will help each individual to improve his or her performance.
  • Because each training course has a different objective, workers are not taught in the same way as young people still in training. Therefore, the psychologist will be able to determine the objective of each participant, transform the objectives into actions, and make sure that training meets the objectives of each participant. Moreover, training has evolved a lot, especially when applied to an adult population. Professionals who train may have various objectives such as
    • Training for a career change
    • Training to change jobs
    • Training to specialise in their field and many others

One of the characteristics of the psychologist is to be impartial and non-judgmental, which when facilitating will allow him/her to put his/her biases aside and focus on the transmission of knowledge

As psychologists, we are trained in evaluation, and we master the tools necessary to evaluate the quality of a course. We can therefore verify, through interviews or questionnaires, that the training has achieved its objective with the target audience.

Training courses on soft skills (defining) should also include a psychologist in particular, as they can cover concepts such as self-confidence, self-esteem, public speaking and emotional management.

Even if it is very useful to call upon a psychologist to create a training course, it is also essential to confront ideas with other professionals and to call upon a multidisciplinary team in a training creation process. So if I tell you to use English language professionals to create an English language course, it seems quite natural and it is obviously important.

I hope that I have been able to interest you in the creation of training in these few lines. see you soon for another topic !
