The psychoshow : a new podcast given by Gwenaelle BUCAS and Jodie GORIN.

Jodie : Hello everybody, welcome to our new show untitled the psychoshow. Today we are going to talk about us and our fabulous student’s lives. So Gwenaëlle, can you present us your life ?

Gwenaelle : Hi everyone, I’m very happy to be here with you and with Jodie. Who am I ? Big question ahah. I am a 22 year old woman who loves kebabs and colorful socks. My first name and my love of salted butter are Breton but I come from the Paris region.

Jodie : Oh, that’s funny, I wouldn’t have believed it! I haven’t seen you look down on me once or heard you complain all day.

Gwenaelle : Oh my god, all these stereotypes in one sentence !

Jodie : I also come from the Paris region so I know what I’m talking about ahah !

Gwenaelle : Hello dear compatriot ! So you, who are you ?

Jodie : Well, I’m 24 years old, and kebabs are a bit hard for me to digest but I approve of socks! I have just arrived in Nantes for my first year of a master’s degree but I validated my degree in Caen. And you ? Did you do all your studies in Nantes?

Gwenaelle : No, I arrived in Nantes two years ago to start the master in clinical psychology. After high school, I did my degree in psychology at the University of Paris Nanterre. During the third year of my degree, I had the chance to go to Montreal as an exchange student. It was a great experience. I didn’t want to go back to France despite the cold winter. And it is very cold, believe me.

Jodie : Oh I believe you ! Canada sounds great but I must admit that if I could choose, I would go to the sun. Tell me, are you one of those people who give their all to their studies and spend all their time studying or do you have a life outside of university ?

Gwenaelle : No no no, Going to class is not my only activity. I am also a volunteer in two associations. I am a scout leader for 2 years. I am also a volunteer for Medecins du Monde since this year. My dream since I was a little girl is to be a psychologist in the humanitarian field and in associations like Medecins du Monde. But before that, I plan to travel around the world, depending on the opportunities that will arise. And you, is this something that interests you or not at all?

Jodie : Oh that sounds awesome ! I’m interested in humanitarian work too ! When I grow up, I would like to go to work in Africa and travel a lot too. But in the meantime I do odd jobs to pay for my studies.

Gwenaelle : What field do you work in ? Is it related to psychology?

J : I correct manuscripts for a publishing house. It’s convenient, I work the hours I want and the rhythm I want. It allows me to manage my studies and my internship at the same time.

Gwenaelle : Oh that’s an interesting job. I take it you have found an internship. You’re lucky, it’s a rare commodity around here! Where are you doing it?

Jodie : In a small unit at Nantes University Hospital. We work with children diagnosed with ADHD and their families.

Gwenaelle : ADHD ?

Jodie : Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. These are children who have serious difficulty concentrating because they have a selective attention disorder and sometimes show signs of hyperactivity. And you ? Did you find an internship ?

Gwenaelle : Yes, I am doing several internships this year. The first one is in a hospital, in the mobile palliative care team. The second is in a rehabilitation center. I’m still looking for the third one, so if you know any psychologists who accept trainees, don’t hesitate to tell me about it ahah.

Jodie : Yeah I know it’s a rare commodity around here.

Gwenaelle : More seriously, do you like your internship? Does it allow you to be sure to become a clinical psychologist?

Jodie : Yes, totally! I did an internship last year in adult psychiatry and it was a really good experience. This year I’m doing an internship in child psychiatry where we see children and their families and I’m lucky enough to be able to intervene during the sessions. It’s a bit stressful but it’s amazing!

Gwenaelle : Are you thinking about working with this population or are you waiting for your other second year masters internships to decide you?

Jodie : Well, I always wanted to work with children. A little bit later in my studies I realised that I would have a hard time helping a child in a dysfunctional family so it seems important to me to get the family too. So yes, I would like to work with this public. But I’m not closed to other doors, my internship with schizophrenic adults last year also pleased me a lot, so why not work in this field too! Between us, the only public I don’t feel capable of working with is the seniors. I’m a bit afraid of them, I admit.

Gwenaelle : You’re afraid of them? But why?

Jodie : I don’t know. I think I have to look for the cause in my childhood, it must be psychoanalysable ahah. And you ? Do you want to work in the field of health psychology?

Gwenaelle : Maybe one day, but for the moment what attracts me the most is to be a psychologist in the humanitarian field and to travel.

Jodie : Oh, the clock is ticking ! Sorry but this is the end of this wonderful podcast. See you soon for the next episode ! Bye bye.
