Practical, Hands-on experiences

Sujin, Sim –Student of MPIE 08

One of advantages of this master program is that I was able to get more practical, and hands-on experiences. Especially at course “Alliances / Partnerships/ Sharing Economy”, the lecture consisted of a lot of seminars and the students met many experts from different kind of areas.

Through the seminar, The lecturers have shared their real experiences when they run a project or business and exchanged questions. And I was able to learn about how partnership is important when we start a business, and that will be a key point in success.

One of the day in the lecture, all students have visited ‘Vietnam silicon vally’ and learned about Vietnam’s start-up programs and incubating systems going on. I was surprised that Vietnam is one of the hotest place for start-up and I thought we’ll get more opportunity in Vietnam.

I also highly recommend this course for foreigners who’re working In Vietnam if they want to get opportunity here. This course will be a good chance for get network in addition to get knowledge.

INNOVATORS –

INNOVATORS

In our opinion, we think that the groups or people which are the first to try ton introduce new ideas, processes, goods and services for the others, are the innovators.

Innovators play an important role in formulation the segment to the companies, the communities and the society because of the reason that their product’s reviews and perceptions depends on them. They influence the society or the people who are interested in a new product or a new platform that give them values. On the other hand, early adopters look up to innovators to make themselves feel assured that the product is good, the service is innovative, or the benefit they want to reach to invest and purchase. Thus innovators have very high social influence.

For instance, “Distrix9 –D9” is an innovative fitness center in Hanoi. The founder of this center – Mr. Hoang Hai Dang is an innovator. Although his own business is an traditional business model, he still succeeds because of his outstanding, attractive and innovative design in rooms and facilities. His fitness center brings plenty of values and added benefits for not only the customers but also his employees.

VENTURE CAPITAL

Venture Capital refers to the activities that investors provide financial capital to individuals and start-up/small businesses that are believed to have long-term growth potential. Venture capital could be from banks, well-off investors or any financial institutions. They have to acknowledge the risks if the project they invest fails to make up for. In case successful, the investment will become the share of the venture capital firm. Venture capital are mainly focused in information technology, biology, chemistry, environmental protection projects or health projects.

A stark example in Vietnam is FPT Ventures, a venture arm of FPT Corporation. With the target to turn Vietnam into a startup country, FPT strategically cooperated with international funds & incubators to support startups by let them take full advantage of technical infrastructure as well as use the resources available from FPT. These startups will have the opportunity to work with experienced mentors internal & external of FPT, with the sole goal is to create the product that the market really needs, and be able to scale not only In Vietnam but also in the world. The highest priority of the fund was to invest Seed and Serie A funds in the companies that had undergone the concept development phase and had already entered the business or groups graduated from local and international incubators in a relationship with FPT.

UNIVERSITY RESEARCHERS IN INNOVATION MANAGEMENT

Writers:

Nguyen Hoang Long – No.13

Innovation management is the science of research. It could be the research of the innovation in products, business process, organizational activities, etc. to find out innovative ideas or solutions to develop the society.

In Hanoi, we can find some universities and researchers are doing in the subject of innovation management. For example, we have University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH) and Master II Innovation Project and Entrepreneurship course (MPIE). Regarding to USTH, which is also called “Vietnam-France University”, has many Master programs focusing on Innovative Technologies like Communication, Nanotechnology, Energy Management, etc. As for MPIE, this is the course giving students knowledge of innovation management in many sides such as: marketing, strategy, business model, etc. It also brings the opportunities for students to launch their own innovative projects. Moreover, we have many researchers and innovators working in Hanoi. The most famous name is Mr. Phan Tat Thu (Prof.) with over 15 years of researching and educating in innovative solution for enhancing capability of people and organization. He is the author of many innovation models like BizMind, BizGo, BizChange, etc. These models can be applied in-house for many Vietnamese Enterprises such as: Joint Stock Bank (LienViet Post Bank, Techcombank, VietcomBank), Bao Viet Insurance, etc. In summary, innovation management is very important in University Research & Study. It’s the background to develop the innovation of Hanoi in the future.

Is Hanoï innovative or not ?

We cannot answer to this question in a simple and radical answer.

On the first hand, we can say Hanoi is an innovative city. The innovation may easily be found everywhere in Hanoi, for instance: innovation start-up/ innovation companies (Apota, Cococ); innovation in banking activities (TPBank LiveBank); innovation communities (Co-working Space, Creative Lab Project, Hanoi Creative City); innovation education (USTH, MPIE). It is the results of government’s efforts to develop the innovation in the recent years. The government understand that sciences, technologies and innovations are important for the development of the city then they plan to foster an ecosystem of start-ups. But how it acts in this way?

Actually, to support innovation, government gives support to innovative structures like the accelerator VSV (Vietnam Silicon Valley) that helps start-ups to get a networking with investors in this aim to have enough money to launch their project. Moreover, Hanoi People Committee is setting up a strategy up to 2020 to encourage and develop innovations of science and technology. For example, they decided to establish the Hanoi Foundation for Science and Technology Development in charge of financial support for the innovative project. Other structures like FIIS, the incubator of the Foreign Trade University, finances and helps several projects a year (which are selected by their jury) from students to develop innovative projects.

In another hand, Hanoi could be described as a non-innovative city regarding the fact that Innovation only involve few people or groups/start up. The reality of the Hanoian population is really far of the aim of Innovation and we could affirm that the most part of the population in Hanoi don’t know anything of the innovation in their city. They don’t even know what could be the impact of this kind of economy. To be innovative, a city as to provide this aspect to the largest part of the population and involve them concretely in it.

In conclusion, although there are still some disadvantages factor such as lack of financial resources, lack of advanced technologies, etc., we strongly believe that Hanoi is extremely potential to become an innovative city and also on the right track to head this target in the near future.
