« Birds of a feather flock together »

In a society where skills and numbers prevail, some organizations are innovating to maintain their competitiveness by developing more qualitative recruitment strategies. It now seems essential that workers correspond to the organization and its functioning as well as to the job.

The person-organization fit concept has potential benefits for organization and employees. Indeed, the employee wants to stay longer and gets more involved. Regarding well being at work, there is a positive effect on physical and mental health as well as an increase of satisfaction in the executions of tasks. Finally, for organizations, the person-organization fit mainly allows to reduce turnover and brings a better yield, which gives to organizations the opportunity to invest to counter competition. However, few studies were made and the lack of methods and tools available to professionals limits the possibility of choice as well as the effects of their adaptation according to the situations.

The person-organization fit concept is defined as « the congruence between the values of the individual and those of the organization » (Chatman, 1989). Concerning values, the authors postulate that it’s more relevant to focus on organizational values rather than individual values. Although the nature of these values is not the subject of consensus, there is general agreement on their utilities, functions and effects. Organizational values refer to the aims to reach and the means implemented to achieve them. They would guide as much perceptions as interpretations of the environment, which would influence how to behave in one’s professional activity.

It could be interesting to transmit and improve the existing tools to facilitate their use and to train the recruitment professionnals. Upgrade tools would also reduce biases. Finally, organizational values are very subjective which questions their measurement. Furthemore, should we refer to the values received orally, displayed or those observed in practice ?
