Nice to meet you ! My name is Eva Chaigne, I’m 21 years old, I’m from Vendée and I’m in first year of IO psychology master in the University of Nantes. And you, Who are you ?
Cédric
Good morning Eva, well, my name is Cédric Faquet, I am thirty-three-year-old and I am in my last year of master degree in IO psychology in the University of Nantes. Why did you choose IO psychology rather than other fields of psychology?
Eva
After I graduated from high-school, I did all my study in Nantes. First, I came in psychology to become a sort of “profiler” you know ? I was very influenced by all the police TV show at this time. Furthermore, in my mind, psychology was only Freud . In the first semester, I was kind of lost: psychology wasn’t what I expected. There were too many currants and so many uncertain theories. But, I persevered thanks to social psychology. I can’t really explain why I do appreciate its, perhaps, as far I’m concern, it’s because it’s the most relevant in everyday life. It’s what you can observe by yourself when you’re in a group. For instance, I can apply it in my work as a teammate in McDonald’s especially when it turns out management or group dynamics. And you, how did you arrive in IO psychology ?

In fact, I am in a resumption of studies. I had a ten-year career before going back to university. I had multiple work experiences before returning to school. I worked as a kitchen designer, as a telecommunication technician in the prisons of the west of France, as a cook, as a server, as a hospital service agent. I chose IO psychology because there is a lot more of work opportunities in this field of science and because I think humans cannot be excluded from their environment to be analyzed. For now, do courses match with your expectations of IO psychology?

Well, it’s not a perfect match between my expectations and what I’m really doing ! After 3 years of theoretical learning I wish I would practice even just a little ! But It’s like that ! I’m waiting for the second semester ! Speaking of the master, What are your master’s thesis ?

Oh you’ll see it will change last year. The last year of Master is full of external speakers and in your internship you’ll be able to practice a lot if your internship director let you practice of course. My master’s thesis is about the social representations of professional success in two types of companies: normal ones and freed ones…Do you know what is a freedom form-companies?
Eva
Well, not at all, What is it ?
Cédric
It is a company where hierarchy is completely banned ! Every actors in this kind of company can act and do whatever he judges good for the well being of the company. And my aim is to prove that workers in freed companies have a different representation of the professional success. My results confirm my hypothesis and I have discovered that each France’s worker tend to have a new representation of success based on valorization while the old one was based on power and domination What about your master’s thesis? Do you have any theme yet? How it is going?

My Master’s Thesis is about the tiger mosquito risk perceptions. In what extent high-risk population see themselves like that ? In fact, I link my master thesis with my internship by doing the latter in the laboratory of psychology in Nantes in order to learn more about research ! I wish I could tell you more, but I’m just at the beginning ! And you, what was your internship ? Was It about work psychology as your master’s thesis ?

Contrary to you, my internship isn’t link to my master’s thesis ! It was in a cancer institute and I worked in the field of research. My internship was about how women with breast cancer live their return at work after the treatment. I had interviews and analysis about their answers. It has gone well. That funny, our project are very different ! What are your plans for the future?
Eva
Yeah, that why I love social and IO psychology ! It’s very vast, it touches a lot of different fields but you can still get link between all of them ! For the moment, I want to become a social professor-researcher in environmental psychology, I have to do a doctorate and then, I maybe will do researches about work environment, who knows ? Perhaps, we will work together ?

Yes, it may be a possibility ! I want to have a PhD after I graduate. My real goal is to become a psychology teacher and work on power theories and groups dynamics. The field of psychology research is a real passion and later, I want to become a teacher researcher.

Oh, that nice, we want to work at the same level but in different fields ! Do you have any advice or tips to bring to a younger student who want to become a researcher too ?
Cédric
Well, I am not an expert in recommendations but to be a researcher, concentrate on articles, read a lot of them to be able to write your own articles. Plus, I would say that it is important to keep in touch with professors, to create a huge network around yourself. Contacts are a real plus in this field of work.
