Mikaëlla : Hi Lucas, nice to meet you. How are you ?

Lucas : Fine, thank you. And you ?

Mikaëlla : I’m fine, thank you. Why did you chose social psychology ?

Lucas : First, I chose social psychology I really do not like developmental psychology and I think that cognitive psychology is interesting but not enough for doing a master. And I was thinking also clinical psychology is interesting but not enough for doing a master this is why I chose social
psychology. And in social psychology there are different theories that I really like. That’s the main reasons.

Mikaëlla : Okay. Have you already done an internship ?

Lucas : Not yet because last year, we had to do..well it was if we wanted to do but it, but we had to do an internship but I did not do it because I was in erasmus so I could not do it since I was in Spain so I could not do an internship. And my first internship will be in March, next year.

Mikaëlla : Okay. Have you an idea of the field in which you would like to work after the university ?

Lucas : Well, I’m not sure yet. This is why, maybe, I want to work in the recruitment or in the human ressources field. And I will decide after my internship in March and my internship during the second year of the master because I plan to do an internship in a recruitment field next year so in March and doing my next internship in the second year of the master I want to do an internship in the human ressources so I can, after these two internships, I can decide. But so I’m not sure yet.

Mikaëlla : Okay. What was for you the greatest difficulty during your studies ?

Lucas : I do not feel like the studies was really difficult but my main point that I consider being difficult was study developmental psychology since I do not really like it, I was not motivated at all to study it, but I had to do it for the exam but I did not want to do it. So that was a problem, that was
probably the most difficult thing.
Mikaëlla : Yes. You do not work with children ?

Lucas : No, not at all

Mikaëlla : Have you chosen your subject of your master thesis ?

Lucas : Yes, it is the social representation of the spirituality among two different populations. It is among a religious population and a population without religion. And I chose it because social representation is the main theory that I really like. This is one of the reasons why I went to this master. And spirituality I had not really the choice because that is the subject of the my teacher that helps me to do my thesis, so…

Mikaëlla : Okay, with mister Roussiau ?

Lucas : Yes

Mikaëlla : It is a good choice. According to you, what are the great qualities of a psychologist, not just technical but more relevant to his soft-skills ?

Lucas : I would say the greatest quality for a psychologist would be empathy because I consider that if a psychologist is kind of cold with his patients for instance, he will miss something and if the psychologist has a lot of empathy, he will understand the emotions of the patients and it will be really useful for him and yeah,I think empathy is the greastest skill.

Mikaëlla : Yes, it is very important. What is your dream, except to be a psychologist of course ?

Lucas : That is a good question. I feel like I do not really have any dream. And I think that this is kind of sad because when you have some dreams, you are motivated to reach your objectives and to reach your dreams. And since I do not have really any dream, sometimes I’m not really motivated to do no matter what. I would like I have some dream but I do not.

Mikaëlla : Okay, thank you Lucas.

Lucas : So now I will ask you some questions to you. So, firstly, why did you start to study psychology and why did you choose in specific social psychology in master ?

Mikaëlla : I choose to study psychology at the age of thirteen. I had to faced psychology illness a bit early, and it questioned me a lot. I like clinical and social psychology but I choose social psychology because problematics at work seem important to me and there are more opportunities to find a job.

Lucas : Hum, that’s true. My second question is about your thesis. What is the subject of your thesis because I think that you have already your thesis since you are in the second year. And why did you choose it ?

Mikaëlla : I choose to work on sexism and on the reduction of prejudices. I choose this topic after an internship in research, where I worked on sexism and where I realized all remaining problems today.

Lucas : Okay, so you’re working with mister Ndobo ?

Mikaëlla : Yes.

Lucas : Is it complicated or… ?

Mikaëlla : A little…

Lucas : Okay. My next question is kind of related to your thesis because I was wondering if in social psychology there is an author or a theory that you particularly appreciated during your studies ? And if yes, why ?

Mikaëlla : Good question. Like a lot, I really appreciated the Milgram experience. It’s impressive and tragical but I found it says a lot on human and its relation with authority and environment. I think this theory can be useful to understand behavior in many situations.

Lucas : Yeah, I agree. I was also wondering, beside psychology, are you interested in other intellectual stuff for instance I don’t know like philosophy or something like this?

Mikaëlla : Well, intellectual, I’m not sure but I’m interested in sign language which I think its a useful tools, even when you’re not hearing disabled. For exemple with young children who are not able to talk yet.

Lucas : Okay, well I think this is kind of an intellectual stuff because language is really important in the common life so I would say yeah this is an intellectual stuff. And there is a subject that every students face, a problem is how do you stay motivated in your studies ? Because sometimes, when for instance you face problems, maybe you can not be really motivated because you are like « awh this is compliqued, I’m tired of this etc. ». So my question is how do you manage to keep being motivaded for your studies ?

Mikaëlla : It’s a really good question ! I had motivation decrease at several time during those five years. Until licence 3 I was very motivated by the fact of being psychologist, it was like a dream. But in master 1, it was much more complicated. Being in social psychology master makes me feel far from psychology itself. I think my motivation for the last two years comes a lot from engagement. It also comes from internship I made in M1, it makes me remember why I’m doing this and see that there are some opportunities I like in social psychology.

Lucas : Okay, and my next question was about your internship because you said that one of the internships you did, and it was related to your thesis, was an internship in the research. So I would like you to
speak about your internship.

Mikaëlla : Okay, I have made a lot of internship during my studies, in clinical psychology in licence. In licence 3, it was on research, about sexism, and also in recruitment. The internship in research was very interesting and I realize my master thesis on this subject. In master 1, last year, I spend eight month in occupational health service of a hospital. I really liked this and I want to keep doing this next year.

Lucas : Okay, so I have another question. Since I really like the theory of social representation, I have a question about this. It’s been now almost 5 years that you study psychology. Do you still have the same representation of it that you had when you were in first year for instance ?

Mikaëlla : In first year with a good comprehension of the different branch and having already read some psychology lessons. So I think I can say that my representation of psychology do not have changed but instead, my representation of the psychologist have changed. I was representing the psychologist as a benevolent person, with huge questioning ability and someone very openminded. Unfortunately, in five years, I have seen that he is not always.

Lucas : Yes, that’s true. I have a last question because we talk about, mostly, about all the university stuff like your thesis, why did you chose these studies and so on. So my last question is for the futur. So what do you plan to do after your degree ?

Mikaëlla : I would like to work in the occupational health service, maybe in a hospital. I would like to be able to work on the individual and on the group. And, I would like to train myself to psychopathology because I think it’s missing from the master’s degree in social psychology.

Lucas : Ok, nice. Well thanks for all of your answers and bye.

Mikaëlla : Bye !
