After doing research on bilingualism, I realized how insufficient our training as a psychologist at university was to work fully with these people who very often have complicated life stories. For this reason, I decided to offer you diploma opportunities to complete our initial training. I will present you with the discipline of psychology that is intercultural psychology.
In an international policy context, migration promotes an increase in the number of people from different cultures and cultural contacts are multiplying. As a future professional, it is important to know that one branch of psychology is interested in the study of psychic phenomena in relation to cultures, namely intercultural psychology (Cross-Cultural Psychology).
This discipline studies the relationships between the psychological variables specific to an individual in his or her culture, the socio-cultural, ecological but also biological variables to identify the psychological functioning in various cultural groups. It relates cultural group membership to the psychological states of the individual in his or her cultural group. Currently in english-speaking countries three sub-domains of intercultural psychology have been defined : culture-comparative psychology, cultural psychology and indigenous psychology. In French-speaking countries, in addition to culture-comparative psychology, cultural psychology, we have the psychology of cultural contacts. In France, its main representatives are Clanet, Camilleri, Vinsonneau and Denoux. Just like cultural psychology and comparative (inter)cultural psychology, the psychology of cultural contacts is interested in the culture-psychism link. The aim of this under discipline is to propose an analysis scheme to identify all the processes (psychic, relational, group, institutional) generated by cultural contacts.
A recent study by Kokou-Kpolou, Moukouta and Baugnet (2017), shows that in France, training in intercultural psychology is not sufficiently developed in universities and it gives rise to debate and controversies. By asking 130 French students about their representations of the teaching of this discipline, the researchers show that psychology students find it to be a poorly developed discipline. If you wish to train, the University of Toulouse offers a degree, but it is not open to students and requires two years of professional experience. The University of Bordeaux offers a diploma to students with a minimum experience requirement. In addition associations encouraging exchanges and intercultural dialogue to facilitate communication between people and thus « Elan Interculturelle » association exists in Nantes and promotes (ouverture d’esprit mieux vivre la diversité culturelle).
