Estevan : Hello, to begin can you describe your study path from the end of the high school to the master?

Lise : After my highschool, I chose to study law at the University of Nantes. Private law, family law and criminal science have been of great interest to me, not only in helping people but also in learning more about life history in order to make a decision. I quickly realized that I was more interested in psychology so I reoriented myself.

First of all, I wanted to do a master’s degree in neuropsychology because I really liked analyzing cognitive functioning and seeing its disorders. But the opportunities seemed more closed to me, which is why I chose the master’s degree in social psychology.

Estevan : Did the years you spent to study law have been beneficial or not and why ?

Lise : I think that each year of study is beneficial even if I felt like I was falling behind and wasting two years. But I learned a lot, the work of law has brought me a great rigour and organization, the workload is not significant so I learned to work better and the years of psychology seemed much more accessible to me.

Estevan : The last year you did an internship, What were your missions and what did it bring you ?

Lise : I did an internship at the Nantes hospital in the occupational health service in a research on the quality of life at work and the empowerment of healthcare workers in medical institutions. I had to interview the caregivers and also administer questionnaires. Then I had to analyse these interviews and questionnaires, write reports, prepare scientific meetings, propose solutions, etc. It allowed me to apply the theories that we studied in class and also to become autonomous in my work and realize what I am capable of.

Estevan : Do you intend to continue in the field of your internship after the master or you have other project ?

Lise : I haven’t found an internship for this year yet. I was thinking of doing an internship in recruitment, because all the people I met told me that doing an internship in recruitment facilitated professional integration. Afterwards, the more we progress in formation, the more I wonder if this is an field in which I see myself in the future. I am still thinking about the possibility of doing another additional formation in order to enhance my CV and legitimize my status as a psychologist.

Estevan : For you which notion of social psychology need to be learn by all and why ?

Lise : Classically I would say discrimination. As much for gender as for ethnicity. It is not normal that in 2020 there is still discrimination between men and women, such as pay, for example. Why should a woman be paid less than a man for the same skills and level?

Moreover, discrimination can lead to many other problems such as harassment or stigmatization, for example, and we know very well the consequences that this can have. So it is a notion to be learned by everyone, but the law should also be better defined in the face of this.

Estevan : Finally, can you give me the strength and weaknesses of your training in Nantes and explain them ?

Lise : I will start with the forces. I think we are well prepared for the intervention in the company. At least in the second year, there is a lot of company diagnosis and improvement proposals. Environmental psychology is also an interesting field to develop, because we are interested in the risks and behaviours of individuals and not only in the environment.

Unfortunately I find more Weaknesses. First of all, the lessons are not updating. The speakers,  who were formerly students in Nantes, explain to us that they took the same lessons 10 years ago, it’s sad.

We clearly lack practices and autonomy, it is not by doing two internships in Master that we are successful.

But the biggest negative point I find is the disappearance of clinical psychology. For me, a psychologist must be able to help people. In our formation,  we have no more clinical psychology at all. When you work in a company, you need to know how to manage people’s discomfort, detect disorders and help them just as much as a clinical psychologist. In fact,  I have the impression that I am no longer studying psychology or only by studying judgments and social relations. So I’m thinking of doing another complementary formation in order to have more clinical knowledge than what we’re being taught.

So right now it is my turn to ask you some questions. So First of all, a simple question: why did you choose to study psychology?

Estevan :Well, it’s a long story! At the end of my high school, I was already hesitating between sport and psychology. At this moment, I preferred to choose to do a sport’s degree, that I validated. This study allowed me to discover psychology because we had psychology classes every semester. And with the internship that I do, I realized that what I wanted to do don’t please me, professor of physical education and sport. And after my sport’s degree, I had the choose between to do a master’s degree in education or restart a degree in psychology. We know what’s I choose, haha. Finally, it’s by going to enroll at the master that my body react to itself, because I made a kind of panic crisis at the idea to registering. So, I choose psychology, especially because I wanted to learn more about what’s going on in our brain. And with that, I got a training in body and mind. That was very fulfilling.

Lise : Did you get your degree in Nantes?

Estevan : Yes, i validated my psychology degree at Nantes. By the way, I didn’t do a full licence, I was able to access the second years directly with my previous licence. For my Sport’s degree i do a few years in the south of France. And I really wanted to com back in Nantes, especially because I got of my family and friend near to Nantes.

Lise : How did you feel about the selection at the entrance to the Master’s degree?

Estevan : Hum, Well.. First of all i feel lucky to be choose because I didn’t have the best grades. I was very anxious, but not by the selection, by all that implied behind. It’s been 6 years that i’m in university, and we all knows that the licence don’t allowed to acess to a lot of things. So, there was this issues to have done 6 years of study for nothing or not that I wanted.

Lise: Have you already thought about your thesis topic? And with which teacher would you like to do it?

Estevan : Yes, we had to return a sheep indicating the referent professor and the subject of the thesis before the vacation. So, yes i have my subject. Once again, i feel lucky because mister Navarro offered an internship that corresponds to my professional project. An internship in the research laboratory on environmental psychology. The theme is relocalisation of people who living in risk zone in coastal environment. And I really wanted to link my thesis to my internship. And that what’s mister Navarro proposed to me, explaining that I can use the internship data and have a large population for my thesis. So my thesis is on identification of places and perception of risk. But I need to appropriate this subject to know where this is going to lead more specifically.

Lise : Have you ever thought about what you would like to do after your master’s degree?

Estevan : Yes, as i said, i have a specific professional project, I would like to be a searcher and professor. But for me the side of research is more important. So I try to do my best to enter in this field. I tell to myself that once i get into this field, I would have a bette vision of my possibilities actions and find topics that I would like to study in environment psychology. Even if what I’m doing now interest me a lot, I’m very curious to discovers new things about environment psychology.

Lise : Ok thank you for your answers.
